Bel Canto Means âBeautiful Singingâ in Italian
The Bel Canto Technique of singing emerged hundreds of years ago, and is the purest form of singing. It was this technique that was used and mastered by history's greatest singersâand by many of today's greatest pop singers. It has proven to be the most effective means for delivering powerful results and preserving the voice.
Despite being recognized as the best method for developing the full power of the voice, it can take many years of discipline to fully master. Moreover, it can be difficult to find teachers willing and able to offer training with this technique.
This Bel Canto Technique teaching series was originally released as an instructional booklet, video and audio cassette, but is now available for viewing free-of-charge on My Series TV. With the series, the viewer can rely on Ed Johnson's decades of experience as a virtuoso performer and voice teacher. Created as eight separate lessons, the videos explore the power and potential of this time-tested technique.
Edward L. Johnson (1923-2008), of the New York Metropolitan Opera, was a master performer and teacher. Before he passed away in 2008, Ed Johnson was a world-renowned master of the Bel Canto Technique. Prior to his teaching career though, Ed had been the youngest person ever to sign on with the New York Metropolitan Opera. However, after losing his first wife to cancer in the 1960s, Ed changed the focus of his life and began a career as a voice instructor. Since then, he acted as master teacher for a multitude of Canada's most-respected vocalists.
In its most fundamental sense, the Bel Canto Technique involves breathing in while you sing. Breath in, you ask!! Yes, you actually take air in while you sing out. This not only gives you great power and allows you to hold notes for a long period of time, it allows you to sing with a vocal range you never believed you had. AND, it prevents undue stress on your vocal cords.
Using traditional methods, instructors like Ed test you by placing a candle in front of your mouth as you sing. If the light of the candle was drawn towards your mouth as you sang, they knew you were doing the procedure properly.
All of today's truly great singers use this techniqueâincluding many pop singers. It is natural to think they were simply blessed with a wonderful voice. However, to get the range, depth and power that they have, they have mastered the Bel Canto technique.
Ed left us with a great gift with this video presentation. Ed took his many years of experience and condensed it into this 90 minute presentation. It should be noted however, that to master the technique, you will have to follow Ed's exercises on a daily basis. Then, with diligence and commitment, Ed promised that within 3-5 years you will have mastered the Bel Canto Technique. As the saying goes, "Anything worth having, is worth working for."
In spite of the lengthy time required to gain mastery, once you have done so, your singing career will never be the same again, and audiences will marvel at the quality and power of your voice!
